On June 22th, a flight of Spirit Airlines was diverted to New Orleans due to the birth of a baby on board.
Cristina Penton boarded Flight 971 from Fort Lauderdale to Dallas with her 11- and 12-year-old kids. The woman, 36 weeks pregnant alerted the flight attendants when the contractions started and they went into action with the help of a pediatrician and nurse that were also on the aircraft.
“A baby being born during a flight is very rare, but our flight attendants are trained to handle medical emergencies in flight and they have access to doctors on the ground via inflight communication,” Spirit Airlines spokesman Paul Berry said.
The baby, named Christoph Carsten Lezcano is healthy, and will have a special gift every year on his birthday: a free flight for him and a guest to anywhere the carrier flies.
