The aircraft was flying from Georgia to Greece and had to descend in Bulgaria.
Lightning struck a plane belonging to the low-cost Hungarian airline Wizz Air, which was operating a flight between the cities of Kutaisi, Georgia, and Kavala, in Greece.
When there was little time to reach the destination, due to the intense electrical storm that hit the area, lightning struck the plane.
“Due to lightning on the plane, the flight Wizz Air W66401 Kutaisi-Kavala, when approaching the international airport of Kavala, was redirected to the international airport of Sofia. Transportation of passengers from Sofia to Kavala will provide the airline”, said the Kutaisi Airport in a statement.
The crew decided to divert to the Sofia International Airport (SOF), in Bulgaria, where the aircraft landed without problems. None of the 170 passengers and crew on board was injured.
