The German airline offers the best guarantees in terms of financial strength.
Alitalia, Italy’s national airline, is in financial trouble and Germany’s Lufthansa seems to be the preferred one to make the acquisition, Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera announced on Thursday.
Although there are still many issues to be resolved in the negotiation between Lufthansa and Alitalia, the main Italian newspaper says that “Negotiations are underway and the two parties are approaching.”
On the one hand Lufthansa wants only to resume the Alitalia routes, without acquiring maintenance and maintaining 6,000 of the 8,000 employees, while the Italian ministers who follow the file and the three commissioners who administer the Italian airline since it was placed under guardianship, asked Lufthansa to reduce by half the number of 2,000 dismissals it intends to carry out.
Meanwhile, another issue to be resolved is the offer proposed by Lufthansa, of 300 million euros initially, which was rejected by the Italians who ask the German airline to raise it to 500 million euros.
On the other hand, the low cost airline EasyJet and the US fund Cerberus Capital Management, were also interested in acquiring partially Alitalia and presented offers, although according to the newspaper Corriere della Sera, “Lufthansa is the solution that seems to offer the best guarantees in terms of financial strength “.
Alitalia was placed under guardianship on May 2 at the request of its shareholders after the employees rejected a restructuring plan that required a cut of 1,700 employees. The airline, which has 11,500 workers, entered a period of economic losses in recent years as a result of competition with low-cost airlines.
The deadline for the sale has been set for April 30, 2018.
